David Ortiz remains in the Intensive Care Unit in Boston after being shot in his home country of the Dominican Republic last Sunday. Six suspects have been detained as a result.
What was initially considered a robbery gone wrong has now been confirmed by police as a hit job orchestrated by two men on motorcycle and two other groups in cars.
Chief Prosecutor Jean Alain Rodriguez said, “At this moment, they are being interrogated and we will continue deepening the investigation to get to the truth about what happened… Nobody involved in this lamentable episode will remain in impunity, not even the material or intellectual author (of the crime).”
Police Maj. Gen. Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte told ESPN that the alleged coordinator of the job was offered 400,000 pesos or $7,800 USD for the attack.
If you have not seen the video, the link is here. WARNING: graphic material. Basically, the security footage shows a man walking up behind Ortiz and shooting him in the back.
On top of the most cowardly move a man could ever make, it is deeply saddening that this even happened. David Ortiz grew up and made it out of one of the most dangerous countries in the world to become arguably the most beloved baseball player of all time. After everything Big Papi has done for his home country, it is absolutely dumbfounding that there is anyone that wants to hurt him.
