PREVIEW: Farmers Insurance Open

Ladies and Gentlemen…it’s that time of year again! Just the other day, I saw ESPN air their first promo for their weekday coverage of the Masters in April and, to be honest, I almost started to cry. This means that it is time to start tuning our new 4k TVs into CBS to hear Jim Nantz and his crew every Saturday and Sunday as CBS kicks off its coverage of the 2019 golf season with the Farmers Insurance Open.

Every week, before large tournaments, I will break down everything you need to know about the upcoming event. This includes tournament stats, player information, Vegas and expert picks, TV information, plus my personal thoughts.

The Farmers Insurance Open is held at the historic and beautiful Torrey Pines South Course in San Diego, California from January 24-27th, 2019. Torrey Pines South Course is a 7,698 yard par 72 course known for its narrow fairways, many bunkers, thick rough and small greens. This years purse is $7.1 million which is in the lower 50% of purses.

Last year at the Farmers Insurance Open, Jason Day won in an exciting 6-hole playoff against Alex Noren.

This is shaping up to be an interesting weekend with a cast of stars from young to old. Big in the media has been that this is Tiger Wood’s first tournament of the season. This is after a good season where Tiger won the Tour Championship and even finished 8th in the money list at the end of the season. The Farmers Insurance Open is also a big deal with Tiger because of what he has been able to do on the course. He was won the event 7 times and has even won the 2008 US Open that was held on the same course. Though, as mentioned above, this course requires you to hit the ball straight and be accurate around the green which is not  good for how Tiger finished last year, finishing 82nd in greens in regulation and 127th in driving accuracy percentage. With the Tiger talk out of the way, we turn our sights towards other major contenders with big names like Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler. But even lesser known names like Jon Rahm, Tony Finau, and Xander Schauffele.

Here are the Power Rankings for the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open from PGATOUR.com’s Rob Bolton:

  1. Justin Rose (12-1)
  2. Marc Leishman (25-1)
  3. Jason Day (14-1)
  4. Tony Finau (20-1)
  5. Brandt Snedeker (33-1)
  6. Jon Rahm (7-1)
  7. Tiger Woods (11-1)
  8. Rory McIlroy (14-1)
  9. Alex Noren (55-1)
  10. Patrick Cantlay (33-1)
  11. J.B. Holmes (66-1)
  12. Gary Woodland (20-1)
  13. Charles Howell III (20-1)
  14. Cameron Smith (40-1)
  15. Emiliano Grillo (45-1)

My pick is on Tiger Woods (11-1) to come away with his 8th Farmers Insurance Open win. His swag coming into his first 2019 start is on point and should make the rest of the field scared. I think he can turn around his bad stats from the end of last year and get the victory on a course he is familiar with. I expect for defending champ Jason Day (14-1) and Jon Rahm (7-1) to make big runs. Also look for Scott Stallings (200-1) to be on the leader board.
