It looks like Sean Payton is still going after people, but this time it is in a fun, legal way. Coach Payton noticed in his film study that when Philly ran the formation “defense stay” Fletcher Cox would come out of his stance slowly and go through the motions of the play very nonchalantly.
Fast forward to Sunday. Saints are down 14-0 to the Eagles and it is 4th and 1 on their own 30 yard line. Philadelphia thought that New Orleans would punt being so far away from field goal range, so they lined up in “defense stay.” Payton sees it and calls a fake punt for the one person who will get the first down 100% of the time. The Mormon Missile, Mr. Fourth Down himself, Taysom Hill takes the snap as the upback and runs directly at Fletcher Cox who was taking the play off.
Needless to say, Mr. Fourth Down got the first. This turned the tide of the entire game. The Saints scored on this drive and one more time before the end of the half. This drive gave the Saints 7 points and led to a 6 point victory. Imagine if Fletcher Cox hadn’t taken the play off.
It would have had the same outcome. Taysom Hill would have still gotten the first down, no question.
