The way I see it; Ohio State’s bid for the 2019 College Football Playoff is signed, sealed, and delivered. They are easily the best team in this year’s Big Ten Conference and are going to be just fine in the absence of Urban Meyer. In fact, it could actually help them. Fortunately, OSU still has great leadership on both sides of the ball in QB and Heisman hopeful Dwayne Haskins and DE Joey Bosa’s younger, more attractive brother, Nick. Without a head coach last week, the Buckeyes were still able to throw up 77 points. I don’t care that they were playing the dumpster fire that is Oregon State. Scoring 11 touchdowns will always be impressive. There are 3 scenarios I can see for Ohio State’s season. All of which, end with them in the CFP.
I think this scenario is very possible: Ohio State goes undefeated and waltzes into the College Football Playoff as the 2 seed. Maybe throw in a close game or 2. They do play several ranked opponents, but some of them will have never been tested before playing the Buckeyes and others looked very weak in their first games.
Most likely Scenario. Ohio State will lose one game in the regular season, but still make it into the CFP. If I had to pick a loss, I think that OSU drops their regular season match up with TCU. Everything is stacked against them. They are playing at TCU in Fort Worth, no Urban Meyer, and it’s their first away game in a hostile environment for their young quarterback. Even if they do lose, it is early in the season and they will have plenty of time to move back up the rankings and slip in as a 2, 3, or 4 seed. Another loss is unlikely since Penn State almost lost to Applachian State and Harbaugh is incapable of beating his rivals.
This is the one that pains me to even think about, but it can happen, so I’m going to go ahead and get over it. Ohio State losing two games. I’m not mad about that at all. I’m mad about what the CFP Committee will do. If OSU loses two games, I’m sure one will be against TCU and the other will probably be against Michigan State. I really would not worry about Penn State or Michigan. Even with two losses, I think they still make it in. The Playoff Committee will completely disregard the early loss to TCU with no Urban Meyer the same way Urban Meyer disregards domestic violence charges. The money obsessed CFP Committee sneaks in OSU at the 4 seed.
I know what you’re thinking, “Wait, Wic, you know OSU is going to have to play #5 Wisconsin the the Big Ten Conference Championship game, right?” Believe me. I’ve thought about this. If history has taught us anything, it is that we should never trust Wisconsin in a championship game. History repeating itself, as it so often does, points directly at Wisconsin proving to be the choke artists they truly are yet again.
Sadly, Ohio State’s season will end in a loss in the CFP. No one is going to beat Alabama.
